Karma [Jan. 24th, 2012|10:11 pm]
The word ‘karma’ has its origin hundreds of years ago from the ancient language of Sanskrit. It is used in Hinduism and Buddhism. To put it in very simple terms, ‘karma’ means ‘action’, but not quite the regular action we are used to. There are numerous implications to the word, that ‘action’ does not do it justice.

Instead, the word ‘fate’ is nearer to its original intended meaning. It is that of which one has to deal with as a result of the things that one does in life. Fate (or predestination, or ‘kisnet’) here can be both positive and negative. If you do good things, then, your karma has it that you will be faced with good results, and vice versa. The popular believe is that karma can take place either in this life, or in the next.

Over the course of time, the term is adapted and adopted in the field of Theosophy, whereby it refers to what is commonly branded as ‘cosmic principle’. Under this principle, each person gets to receive either reward or punishment in a future life. This future life is known as ‘reincarnation’.

As the modern person goes through life, he or she is faced with numerous struggles and difficulties. Often times, it is religion or a sense of belief in the supernatural that brings him/her back, time and again, to the basic concept of karma.

In recent times, the cosmic principle and karma have been made to be very popular, especially when movies are made to dwell upon themes along this line. For example, the movie ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ documents a woman’s journey in search of herself through the many spiritual layers of her mind and psyche. Many times over, karma and all its inferences were the center point of this woman’s thought process.

Karma is nowadays a term so popular that its meaning has been expanded into other realms of life. For example, there is a toolkit named ‘Karma’, which is an information and communication technology (ICT) tool related to processes of encryption, authentication, user interface, graphic display, and the like.

It is no doubt that karma connects to the basic yearning of many people, hence its popularity.
