Last night, I was listening to the Penguins post-game and they were discussing the changes that were proposed in the NHL. 1. Disallow goaltenders from handling the puck behing the goal line. I'm a little skeptical about this one. I say, let the overprotected babies wander out of the net, but allow them to be fair game. As some of you should remember, the Central Catholic goaltender wouldn't have come out of his net, our Junior year, had he known I was going to lay a helmet jarring hit on him. (I know it wasn't behind the net, but the issue still remains) Not to mention, you let this happen in the NHL, and guys will be out there to protect their goaltender, which will lead to more fighting, more excitement. 2. Move the nets back 3 feet, only allowing 10 feet from the end boards to the goalline instead of 13. I'm split on this one, but I suppose a larger attack zone will allow the offense to occur. 3. Reduce the size of goalie pads from 12 inches in width to 10 inches. I love this idea. Goaltenders are cheaters. They do whatever possible to gain the upper hand, but no longer. What can players do to help themselves as goalies do? There are various retrictions on players, most notably, the rule on the curve of sticks. This is going to open up five holes and mid height shots, which will again lead to more goals. 4. My personal favorite. Reintroduce the "tag up" offsides rule. Currently, if a team is offsides, they must all vacate the attack zone until the defensive team carries, or otherwise clears the puck out of the zone. The "tag up" rule will allow the attacking team to get out of the zone, then once they have all left, go back in. The ACHA uses the "tag up" rule, and from personal experience, I think it is great for the game. It makes the game faster, a criticism of the current NHL, and also creates more offense and excitement. All of these changes are going to make the NHL more exciting. Scoring is going to be up and hitting is going to be up. Don't get me wrong, this isn't going to save the NHL by any means; however, if these changes take place, I forsee the style of the NHL going back to the early to mid 1990's. Speed and scoring accompanied by physical play, as a hockey purist, I like it.

By the way, Beard, I'll swear to you, that once the Valley News Dispatch called me and said they couldn't reach Jake, then asked me who they should call. I gave them your name and phone number, both cell and home. My guess is, they looked at all your league leading stats and were intimidated to call. And I was only partly serious about the "Rome.." comment. I'm proud to be a small part of rebuilding the Duquesne program, as I recall you telling me, "Going to Duquesne will be the worst mistake of your life. You'll become addicted to coke and piss your life away." Good call, self proclaimed 'Nostra.'

In addition, I just read the Post Gazette, and they said there are two other rule changes that will be attempted in the AHL before being implemented or thrown out in the NHL. First, a win will be worth 3 points, rather than two, and an overtime win will be worth 2 points. This is meant to discourage "playing for the tie." Also, a shootout will take place if there is a tie after overtime, with the winner of the shootout taking the 2 points. The league is desperate, they're going to try anything and everything at this point. My verdict is still out on this one, I don't want to make any brash comments before I think this one over, and even then I'll probably still have to see it first.
