| thoughts on affiliate programs |
[May. 15th, 2007|12:13 pm] |
1. Largely, affiliate managers are meaningless to me as an affiliate. Their purpose is recruiting and maintaining affiliates for the merhcant. However, nothing they say or do matters if the conversions suck. Support is nice, though rarely needed.
2. If you can rank for competetive terms, you dont need to know anything. Just get a nice "click here" link and you will get rich.
3. The "secret" or 1% niches, in my experience, are ones where there is no affiliate programs. Private deals are struck.
4. For beginners, even the most competitive areas may have "fringe" traffic where you can pick around the edges. Before selling shower curtain rings, think about whether you can bulld enough traffic in the niches or whether you could get the 2 leads a day in say, finance which pay $130 total.... |

| Top Ten things said about Iraq that you will never hear said about Ghettoes in the US. |
[Jan. 18th, 2007|08:39 am] |
10. “Isn’t it great that Iraqi’s are free to flood their streets with tens of thousands of protestors in open demonstrations.”
As the celebration of the ability of Iraqi’s to protest after being under the rule of Saddam for so long goes on, the right to demonstrate here in America is being thwarted by chain linked fences, zoning that stipulates that demonstrations and protest are limited to a particular area as seen at the recent political Conventions and any time the current President visits a city. Protestors are also being questioned by government agencies as to what are their plans when they are planning a demonstration.
9. “There is no physical security without economic security”
This was said by the Great Don of the Pentagon Rumsfield. Quoting sista Constance; “doesn’t this sound like no jobs, no peace”? This administration and white folk in general seem to understand that without economic security it is almost impossible to maintain physical security in Iraq but dismiss this idea here in America. How can there be a reasonable expectation of security when the majority of the people living in any one area are unemployed and need to feed themselves and their families. People in need will do whatever it takes to get by, i.e. rob, steal, sell drugs, steal cars etc. In America you will find that most of those in prison came from economic disadvantaged conditions that lead them to a life of crime and subsequently prison. The idea there is no physical security without economic security is rejected in America but embraced as a reality in Iraq.
8.”Iraqi’s can not recover from forty years of Hussein savage brutality overnight, it will take decades.”
This is one that always gets my attention. Here is yet another instance of white folk accepting a universal truth about Iraqi’s but dismiss this same truth as it relate to black men and women in America that survived four hundred years of white American savage brutality, only to be rewarded with Black codes, Jim crows, mis-education, lynching, rape, castration, being made to love other than ourselves, the list goes on but we are expected to recover overnight. If Iraqi’s will need decades to recover from forty years of savage brutality by Saddam how long would it take a people to recover from four hundred plus years of savage brutality unequaled to anything witnessed or experienced in all of Iraq?
7. “Political quotas will facilitate fairness and the political viability of the Future Iraq”
This aught to make everyone’s mouth drop! This administration not only admits but they articulate and help past legislation for there to be quotas as to facilitate fairness in Iraq. How is it that this administration is as understanding of the real world as it relates to Iraq but not here in America as it relates to Black men and women. The very mention of quotas here in America especially in politics gets white folks blood boiling but yet in Iraq they have created a quota system that guarantee the Kurds, Sunni, Shiite and women spots in politics and decision making positions. This again is indicative of the belief in white supremacy and the inferiority of everyone else. The only people capable of being fair are white folk thus quotas in a majority white system is not necessary.
6. “We are confiscating thousand of guns to reduce violence and killings.”
I thought guns didn’t kill people, people kill people? This is of course another example of this administration hypocrisy. Here we have this administration removing guns from the hands of Iraqi’s saying it will reduce violence but yet this same administration just allowed the ban on assault weapons to expire. If we follow the same logic that is accepted in Iraq the assault weapon ban should have not been allowed to expire. The late eighties and early nineties seems to be in the distant past but the truth is with the expiration of the assault weapons ban we will see the return of the UZI and AK47 to the hands of killers and criminals and you can guess who will be affected most by this ban not being renewed.
5. “We probably alienated thousands of Iraqi’s whom support we need by doing hundreds of midnight home invasion looking for a few insurgents.”
Is this not the story of Black life in America? The police have harassed so many of us while trying to get those who represent the criminal element from amongst us that they have alienated most of us. Black men and women are not born distrusting the police this is a learned behavior via our interactions with the police in our communities. We have seen the police absent when things are going bad and on the scene in force when all we were doing is having some fun or possibly gathering in numbers that put fear in their hearts. Police Brutality has been a reality in the Black community for as long as we can remember and if those who are in charge in Iraq understand that over policing alienates the populace, why is such understanding absent from the over policing in our communities.
4. “Condition in Abu Gharib under Saddam Hussein were unimaginable to most American: desperate pleas scrawled in excrement on the walls, crammed cells, torture, humiliations and unjust executions.”
Apparently the Military lawyer who made this statement as noted by sista Constance is either ignorant or unfamiliar with prison conditions here in the U.S. The only people who think such conditions are unimaginable are those who have not known anyone that has spent some time behind the wall.
3.”We have to put ourselves in Iraqi Shoes, and become culturally sophisticated enough to win the only battle that counts, the one for Iraqi hearts and mind.”
This is Laugh out Loud funny here. When was the last time there has been talk about winning the hearts and mind of Black folk in America. When was the last time someone said this is the only battle that counts. The American approach to Iraq and the problems facing Iraq is not practiced here in America.
2. “You have to expect a people that is suppressed and denied opportunity to erupt on occasion”
This again is the Don of the Pentagon speaking. If it is reasonable to expect a people suppressed and denied opportunity to erupt on occasion; why is there shock and surprise when cities and towns erupt here in the U.S.? When ever Black folk erupt we are made to appear irrational and our eruption to be without merit. Strange enough the next time there is an eruption in America we should all make sure we repeat what Donald Rumsfield said.
1.”Men without jobs feel emasculated and desperate and that is why our number one mission is to get Iraqi’s into jobs.”
In saving the best for last this statement says a mouthful. There is no doubting that a man does not feel like a man if he can not provide for his family, and because of that he becomes desperate in his attempt to provide for his family. A Recent study stated N.Y unemployment for Black men was at fifty percent. I did not hear one politician, come out and say their number one mission was to get those Black men into jobs as to escape the feeling of desperation and emasculation.
This list says so much about America and how it view Black men and women that have suffered here and have yet to have redress for our unwarranted and ungodly suffering here in America at the hands of white folk. So while white folk are up in arms about Africa Town in Detroit,; to establish Africa Town would only take ten percent of the monies spent in Iraq. Why are white folk not as disturbed by the spending in Iraq as they are in the plan for spending on Black folk in America, it is because they are in direct competition with us and do not believe we deserve what they received and that is structural empowerment in order to attain wealth. |

IF the court decides something is unconstitutional, it was ALWAYS unconstitutional. It "didn't exist". You get out of jail free, etc.
This doesn't matters much. There are four problems:
1) Until the court strikes down a law out, you have no idea if it will. This includes the rest of the legal system.
2) The government still comes for you. "Get out of jail free." It doesn't refund your lawyer's fee, your bondsman's fee, get your job back - with back pay, reassemble the broken family, restore your credit rating, replace your lost piece of lifetime, replace your repossessed car and house, replace the expensive collectible guns you had to forfeit, fill the hole in your resume, etc.
It does erase the criminal record. Of course, this doesn't help if the info is already in hundreds of non-court databases. This is after they knew damned well it would get thrown out. There is no way to sue them. "I vas Chust Dooink my Chob!"
Bar Graph Graphs Headlines Report Tree MDI
3) Normally, the courts normally don't consider the issue until someone is convicted of violating the law in question. Plus, there needs to be NO other way to dispose of the case without addressing the issue. With that, it still takes the Supreme Court to definitively strike down a new law. Plus, they can arbitrarily refuse to hear the case. This they usually do unless two appellate courts disagree, and sometimes not even then.
and...
4) It takes LOTS of time and work to strike down a law. It takes legislators and the president very little time and work to pass another law like it, with slight tweaks.

[Aug. 30th, 2006|09:04 pm] |
That's just it. Women seek external validation for what motivates/drives them. This is to increase self-esteem. But, some do it to the point they are willing to trade on this for attention. How does a man discern between the lady and the jump-off, visually.

Some women run the risk of being seen in the same category based on appearance. More importantly, their self-esteem is indirectly controlled by external forces. These set the stage for problems later in relationships, in my experienced opinion.

It's confusing, but I happen to be very discriminating. This is not because chicks don't look good. Rather, it's because of the thinking going into all that. Besides, usually, it ends bad for the female. I have seen it over and over ... kind of like the movie "Groundhog Day."

[Aug. 12th, 2006|12:20 am] |
MySpace is like a heroin addiction, without the upside. If you visit the meaning for each type of MySpace photo, you see the first part of the problem. No one knows how to take a good picture anymore. Essentially, there are four types of pictures on My Space. The trendy "I take pictures of myself in the mirror" photo, the "I'm too ugly or trying to be too hip to use my real photo" image, the "I'm hideously deformed and want a picture of me from far away" photo, and the "look at my booze / dog / make up / left over crack" shot.

Simply take a picture of yourself and use it. You shouldn't care what others think of your appearance. If you have enough self-confidence to post your profile on a website used by over five million people, you have the self-confidence to post a photo of yourself. However, don't use one of those four kinds of pictures. They're unoriginal, dumb, and many would rather look at topographical maps than look at your uninspiring photo contribution to the world.

| buying stock |
[Jul. 4th, 2006|02:33 pm] |
There are several methods for buying and financing stocks. Commonly, it is through a stock broker. Whether they full-service or discount, they all do one thing. They arrange the transfer of stock from a seller to a buyer. Actually, most trades are done through brokers. They are listed with a stock exchange, including the New York Stock Exchange.

There are many different stock brokers to choose. Usually, full service brokers charge more per trade. However, they give investment advice or more personal service. Discount brokers offer little to no investment advice. However, they charge less for trades. Other brokers are banks or credit unions who are set-up with either full-service or discount brokers.

| Orkut and penalty for success |
[Apr. 26th, 2006|05:08 am] |
August, 2005, a freeware program was developed in Delphi. It was called Floodtudo. "tudo" in portuguese means "everything". The developer was Brazilian.
The purpose of the software was specifically to flood orkut. It quickly spread among the users and was easy to download. The most used Floodtudo versions were 1.2, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.2. Since it was used by thousands of spammers, a spam wave struck orkut in September and October of 2005.
Indie Journal Xanga Layouts Myspace Layouts Dark Lee DarkLee Profile
The flooding of orkut was getting out of hand. So, the developers added new features to stop this. For instance, users were not allowed two or more verbatim topics or scrapbook entries to be submitted. Or, users were forced to wait before posting another topic. Or, features were added such as scrapbook entry, and the use of captchas.

Community moderators were given more rights. This allowed them to ban users, rather than relying on the developers to remove them. Also, community moderators get to mass delete posts too.

| An explanation of DNS |
[Apr. 11th, 2006|03:20 am] |
Most non-administrators have no direct interaction with DNS servers. So, it's not difficult to lose sight of the two distinct functions of a DNS server.
Backgrounds & Layouts Myspace Backgrounds & Xanga Layouts Myspace Backgrounds Codes Myspace Backgrounds Free Graphics Myspace & Xanga Backgrounds
A DNS server advertises to the world the various resource records associated with a domain. This is known as an "authoritative name service". Probably, it is only a familiar function to webmasters.
To find a website (not using an IP address), you need for some name servers to be authoritative for it. Generally, the hosting provider operates these nameservers. Webmasters associate domains with these name servers at the time of domain registration (or, at least with the registrar at some point soon after).
Myspace Backgrounds Myspace Layouts Xanga Backgrounds Myspace HTML Codes Free Myspace Backgrounds
Another function of DNS is as a "caching" or "recursive" DNS server. It tells clients the answers to queries for various resource records. This includes records it can't resolve directly. Non-local record queries are forwarded, or recursed, to servers to answer them. Users are generally not aware of the handoff.
All users of the internet (not using IP addresses), use recursive (caching) DNS to resolve names to IP addresses.
Myspace & Xanga Layouts Myspace Xanga Icons Myspace Layouts & Free Graphics Myspace Layouts & Xanga Xanga Layouts & Myspace Backgrounds
Generally, the two services do not need to be done by the same box. It's good design to keep them separate. The BIND4 operations guide hints to separate these for performance reasons. There is no discussion of the security benefits of separating them. The BIND8 documentation doesn't talk about it much, beyond showing you how to disable recursion. |

[Mar. 22nd, 2006|05:36 pm] |
His money was made after doing the fancy server stuff.
Anyone trying the same thing would hit a road block. Why? It is due to the huge expense of getting past the spike in traffic.
Most people do not know what they need. So, they have to hire somebody, to tell them what to do. Most of the time, that person makes more money creating a complex system.
Myspace Myspace Layouts Myspace Layouts Myspace Layouts Myspace Layouts
In my experience, consultants do not help you with this as efficiently and cheaply as possible. The misleading part is anybody can do this. It is not true you can only do this with access to money or code skills like him.
Suppose I get a huge spike and make a lot of money with adsense. You do not see that adsense money for over a month (almost two months if it starts at the begining of the month). If you do not have the money when the traffic spikes, you are dead. You lose that momentum.
Most sites have a hard time with traffic spikes. It is worse with a sustained high level of traffic. If the traffic is coming at a slow steady pace, nobody invests in a big infrastructure until it is too late.
If you were real frugal, and saved your money while growing, you might catch it in time. However, you would be lucky to get half of he did. It is hard justifiying the effort for that kind of traffic, based on your current growth. This is especially true when very few people get to that level.

| adsense and affiliates |
[Feb. 27th, 2006|12:13 am] |
Depends on the site. On an editorial site with diverse content (like mine), not all topics or pages are a good fit for affiliate programs. AdSense does a great job of monetizing pages that otherwise wouldn't earn revenue.
Example: I might have an information site about luxury travel that earns a ton of money from hotel affiliate links on its Springfield and Shelbyville tourist-information pages, but if I write a review of an Elbonian rowboat cruise, that review isn't likely to earn money. That's where AdSense comes to the rescue: It displays ads for Elbonian rowboat cruise lines and travel agencies, and I earn money with every click.
Finally, people need to stop thinking of affiliate programs and AdSense as an either-or proposition. The two can coexist peacefully and profitably. I use both on my site, and both pay extremely well. |

I tend to lean more towards Blogs for a number of reasons.
Backgrounds Backgrounds and Layouts Pioneer Report Free Microsoft (MSN) Software Downloads
The online world has marketed Blogging as the best new thing for surfing more than forums which have brought traffic from millions of reader’s everyday. Don’t get me wrong, I still believe that Forums are the best information tool available for free online and they too attract lots of traffic but only if you do things right.
Myspace Layouts Myspace Codes Myspace Layouts Myspace Backgrounds
A forum can be a total failure when you simply can’t get people to post – ok you can go out and pay someone to create posts.
Furl links More furl links

With Blogs you put exactly the information and links you want on your pages but with a Forum you need to rely on the users which gives opportunity for your competition to add their links in their posts which can be sometimes a nightmare to track – you can turn off URL’s but for me I hate these type of Forums.
Xanga Layouts Free cool cursors Myspace Xanga animated Myspace Graphics Free Images Pics Animated Gifs Hit Counters Web Page Stat Trackers
Although you can edit posts and links created by others you need to be extremely careful not to piss off the users or you may see a drop in posts and traffic. I know of one Forum that lost over 90% of its users because the owner gave Moderation duties to a number of teenage friends and didn’t have the time to keep an eye on things. Over a 3 month period things got really ugly with insults being passed from the Mods who then proceeded to edit random posts for no apparent reason. It ended up that one of the long time users of this forum started his own which won all the original users and 2 years later are still going strong.

Another important factor is users of forums will not click out of the Forum as much as someone who is reading a Blog because they are in the Forum to gather help or to have conversation with other users.

I know when I am browsing forums like DP I stay there until I have read as much as I can, which takes more than 2 hours. The only time I really use a link is when someone posts it and if I do visit the posted url I open it in another browser window. For example, the majority of people reading this post are probably going to click elsewhere within DP to read more rather than click out of the site altogether, unless they are totally pissed off with this information and close their browser in disgust.
For Blogs, if I haven’t seen the Blog before I’ll read some of the posts and if I like it I’ll pop it into my favorites and navigate out. If I visit a Blog in a daily basis such as the Google Adsense Blog I’ll only read the current post and then leave the site, either by using a link on a post or using an advert. My approximate time for reading one Blog is 5 minutes before I move on.
I am glad I have caught your post as I am too trying to decide if I should build a forum, I already did but decided to remove it after a week – I’m thinking its going take up lots of my valuable time to setup and maintain. Hopefully someone can prove my information to be wrong and possible persuade me to build one. |

I'd like to add a clarification here if I may, as I think comments on "Gaming the system" are innapropriate to the reality of what webmasters who employ blocking are actually doing.

Nobody is suggesting that people can, or should try and second guess what advertisers pay most. For example, trying to guess if Steve's car repairs or John's car repairs is the poorer payer is impossible so shouldn't be attempted. Likewise, deciding if London hotel bookings or book a hotel in London is the best option is equally impossible and stupid. If people try this then the penalty is that they are going to lose money. This is what I believe Google is advising, and rightly so.

However, we are NOT talking about trying to cherry pick between genuine advertisers - everybody put that thought out of your minds right now. What we ARE talking about blocking are sites that DO NOT CONFORM TO GOOGLE'S PUBLISHED TOS. Google doesn't seem able or willing to enforce the TOS on publishers, so the only option is for webmasters to block them as we see them.

The problem is that Google's algorythm routinely removes ads it KNOWS historically are good performers on your site, and replaces them with sites it *thinks* will work better, based purely on data from elsewhere. In most cases these ads are from scrapers / MFA sites. Quite frankly that's an insane thing to do, but they do it all the time. I've blocked about 3 more this week.

Blocking these sites isn't "Vanity" but sound financial sense for Google, publishers and other (genuine) advertisers. The effect of having them there for a while is that smartpricing downgrades your site as a whole, and clicks from genuine advertisers will only get you minimum amounts. By improving the quality of advertisers by rooting out the TOS violators, smartpricing will re-value your site upwards, and genuine advertisers will pay you more.
There should not be a penalty imposed for enforcing the TOS where Google won't, but there is a reward - higher earnings in the long term. |
