Wisp of smoke? It was the merest whisper, of no more importance than a wisp of smoke in a forest fire, yet it seemed out of place and not in context with the plot of the Judge John Deed drama on BBC1 Friday 6th January 06. I stored it to memory and then forgot it.
I woke up this morning feeling it was significant……….and I think it is. Is it the forerunner of the acceptance that mobile phone masts and TETRA cause harm to humans and animals; is it the wisp of smoke that starts the search for a forest fire?
Last year we had a few scenes in TV dramas about protestors and phone masts which seemed to be some sort breakthrough, but it died a death.
See what you think of this from the Judge John Deed programme?
A man, presumably someone’s clerk, had a conversation very briefly with John Deed’s secretary. The gist of it was “There are a couple of interesting cases coming up. There is one with phone masts on a block of flats and some of them are in a bad way.” Then the scene was over. It was so brief that if you sneezed you would have missed it. It didn’t seem to relate to the story and you had the feeling it was rushed.
Time will tell if I am right, but we certainly seem to have someone onboard out there.
(Or several someones?)

Sandi,
Unfortunately I missed it. But do you remember the Sunday night police drama, 55 Degrees North, that was on about 4 months ago. One episode featured residents living in a block of flats who kept destroying phone masts that were sited on their flats. In fact I've just looked at the BBC website for the programme and see both our comments about the phone mast issue have been posted! It is under the comments for the third episode. It would be interesting to find out if the writers are the same for both programmes.

I don't think they have the same writers. A earlier series of Judge John Deed had a leading plot line featuring a mother with a brain tumour, caused by her mobile who took action against a telecom company. The company was portrayed as the villain in cahoots with govt. ministers and civil servants. The woman dies. There was a subplot featuring Deed's student daughter involved in a phone mast campaign. The writer obviously is 'on message' and it's good to see the issue on primetime TV even if it's tabloid telly and is treated as comedy by the legal profession.

Karen.
I also saw this episode.
The picture given of the telecom company people in the John Deed episode is very near to the truth.
They are villains. We have had dealings with them during the time up to our court case and have met them in court.
They lied and bullied, and cheated, and they still do.
It seems that to be an employee in that industry requires special qualifications that the majority of people would not want to be associated with. No decent persons anyway.
I have no idea where the companies dig up these people.
And yes, also by experience. They are in cahoots with gov. ministers and civil servants, like planning officers and such.
I wonder what is in it for them personally. But there is something.
F.inst. Lord Irvin (Blairs old kissing cousin who got ousted last year) now works for Hutchison Wampoa, who are big here in the big ports, and also own Huchison 3G UK Ltd. better known now as 3. and they pay for conferences and such for the government, that is a fact and has been in the press.
Regards.
