"The French embassy in Mexico said Thursday it had lodged strong protests with Mexican authorities over the alleged torture of a French citizen by Mexican police.
Gilles Francis Moreaux, who is now being held in a jail in the central state of Puebla, accused the regional police of beating him repeatedly for two days until he signed a confession they had prepared, according to the embassy.
Moreaux was accused of being involved in kidnapping his friend Irianelly Miranda Dominguez in September 2008, local media reported.
Moreaux has sought help from Mexico's National Human Rights Commission and the Attorney General's Office.
France has previously raised objections over the case of another citizen, Florence Cassez, a woman sentenced to 60 years in jail for her part in three kidnappings. Cassez was first arrested in December 2005." |
