Wizards could hear the name
A murmur rose from the gathered men, before them and behindAnd then one man spoke aloud amid the shadows of falling dusk in that lonely placeA voice from the line behind them
"By the blood of the god!" that voice cried from the heartA man had dismounted and was striding quickly forward to stand in front of themDevin saw that the man was small, not much bigger than himself, perhaps thirty years old or a little more, and that he was moving awkwardly and clearly in pain, with Alessan's arrow in his arm
Ducas was looking at his wizard"Sertino, what is this?" he said, with an edge in his voice
"Sorcery," the wizard said bluntly
"What? His?" Ducas nodded towards Erlein It was the wounded man who spoke, his eyes

"You do know, don't you?" Marius said finally There was a certain wonder in his voice"I've had enough time to think about it, Triad knowsOnce the trade routes open I think my province and its name are lostWith what you can offer him, Brandin will be a hero in the west, not a TyrantHe will be so secure that there will be nothing I can do, BearYour Kingship may be my undoing
"Are you sorry you helped me to it?"
Devin watched Alessan wrestle with thatThere were currents of emotion running here, far beneath the surface of what he could see and understandHe listened, and remembered
"I should be sorry," Alessan murmured at length"In a way it is a kind of treachery that I am notBut no, how can I possibly regret what we worked so hard to achieve?" His

"Devin, I really don't want the details!" She was angry with herself for how edgy this sort of thing made her feelNot like that, though yes, there was that at the beginning"I think what I learned was something about what the Tyrants have done to usNot just Brandin, and not just in TiganaBoth of them, and to all of us

Alessan's mother was dying
Ice is for deaths and endings, Alienor had said to Catriana in the hall
He was cold, and very sadHe moved forward and ended the silence, knocking gently on Catriana's door
She'd had a restless night, for many reasonsAlienor had disturbed her: both the unbridled sensuousness that emanated from the woman, and the obviously close, unknown past she shared with Alessan and Baerd
Catriana hated unknown things, information hidden from herShe still didn't know what Alessan was going to do tomorrow, what this mysterious meeting in the highlands was all about, and ignorance made her uneasy and even, on a less acknowledged level, afraid
She wished she could be more like Devin sometimes, matching his seemingly tranquil acceptance of what he could or could not knowShe has seen him storing away the pieces of what he did learn and patiently waiting to receive another piece, and then putting them together like the tiles of a children's puzzle game
Sometimes she admired

What defines something to be an asset, or something to be a liability are not wordsIn fact, if you really want to be confused, look up the words "asset" and "liability" in the dictionaryI know the definition may sound good to a trained accountant, but for the average person it makes no senseBut we adults are often too proud to admit that something does not make sense
As young boys, rich dad said, "What defines an asset is not words but numbersAnd if you cannot read the numbers, you cannot tell an asset from a hole in the ground
"In accounting," rich dad would say, "it's not the numbers, but what the numbers are telling youIt's just like wordsIt's not the words, but the story the words are

"If there is a King in the south and not another four hundred years of the Mother and her priestessesVery well," Marius said, "then tell me what it is you do need

The most important specialized skills are sales and understanding marketingIt is the ability to sell--therefore, to communicate to another human being, be it a customer, employee, boss, spouse or child-that is the base skill of personal successIt is communication skills such as writing, speaking and negotiating that are crucial to a life of successIt is a skill that I work on constantly, attending courses or buying educational tapes to expand my knowledge
As I have mentioned, my educated dad worked harder and harder the more competent he becameHe also became more trapped the more specialized he gotAlthough his salary went up, his choices diminishedSoon after he was locked out of government work, he found out how vulnerable he really was professionallyIt is

Through the open doorway she saw him sit down again at the long trestle-table, across from DonarShe gazed at the two of them for a moment, thinking about Verzar, about love and then desire
She turned away again to look out into the night toward the huge brooding outline of the castle in whose shadow she had spent her whole lifeShe felt old suddenly, far older than her yearsShe had two small children sleeping with her mother and father tonight in one of those shut-up cottages where no lights burnedShe also had a husband sleeping in the burying field, a casualty, one of so many, of the terrible battle a year ago when the numbers of the Others seemed to have grown so much larger than ever before and so cruelly, malevolently triumphant
Verzar had died a few days after that defeat, as all the victims of the night battles did
Those touched by death in the Ember Night wars did not fall in the fieldsThey acknowledged that cold, final touch in their souls, like a finger on the heart, Verzar had said to her, and they came home to sleep and wake and walk through a day or a week or a month before yielding to the ending that had claimed them for its own
In the north, in the cities, they spoke of the last portal of Morian, of longed-for grace in her dark HallsOf priestly

OF THE ROYAL MEDALS

At a period when the attention of Government to science had not

undergone any marked change, a most unexpected occurrence took

place His Majesty intimated to the Royal Society, through his

Secretary of State, his intention to found two gold medals, of

the value of fifty guineas each, to be awarded annually by the

Council of the Royal Society, according to the rules they were

desired to frame for that purpose

The following is the copy of MrPeel's

letter:--

WHITEHALL, December 3d, 1825

SIR,

I am commanded by the King to acquaint you, that His Majesty

proposes to found two gold medals, of the value of fifty guineas

each, to be awarded as honorary premiums, under the direction of

the President and Council of the Royal Society, in such a manner

as shall, by the excitement of competition among men of science,

seem best calculated to promote the object for which the Royal

Society was instituted

His Majesty desires to receive from the President and Council of

the Royal Society their opinion upon the subject generally of the

regulations which it may be convenient to establish with regard

to the appropriation of the medals

France Protests Torture of Its Citizen in Mexico Kidnap Case [Jan. 25th, 2010|04:51 pm]
"The French embassy in Mexico said Thursday it had lodged strong protests with Mexican authorities over the alleged torture of a French citizen by Mexican police.

Gilles Francis Moreaux, who is now being held in a jail in the central state of Puebla, accused the regional police of beating him repeatedly for two days until he signed a confession they had prepared, according to the embassy.

Moreaux was accused of being involved in kidnapping his friend Irianelly Miranda Dominguez in September 2008, local media reported.

Moreaux has sought help from Mexico's National Human Rights Commission and the Attorney General's Office.

France has previously raised objections over the case of another citizen, Florence Cassez, a woman sentenced to 60 years in jail for her part in three kidnappings. Cassez was first arrested in December 2005."
