His rich dad encouraged Robert to know how to hire smart people
Having two dads caused many problemsRobert's real dad was the superintendent of education for the state of HawaiiBy the time Robert was 16, the threat of "If you don't get good grades, you won't get a good job" had little effectHe already knew his career path was to own corporations, not to work for themIn fact, if it had not been for a wise and persistent high school guidance counselor, Robert might not have gone on to collegeHe was eager to start building his assets, but finally agreed that the college education would also be a benefit to him
Truthfully, the ideas in this book are probably too far fetched and radical for most parents todaySome parents are having a hard enough time simply keeping their children in schoolBut in light of our changing times, as parents we need to be open to new

The time was offering a jewel, truly, falling from the heavens, waiting to be claspedTo be set upon his brow
He was still uneasy though, almost uncannily so, sitting alone as the morning brightened, trying to convince himself of the truth of all this shining promiseHe was more than uneasy

You should be ashamed of yourself
"There are so few pleasures left to me in my age," the other retorted"Would you deny me this one too? There is much to tell, you say? Tell me
Alessan's voice grew sober"I had a meeting in the mountains this morning
"Ah, I was wondering about that! And what follows?"
"Everything, RinaldoWe will have the lettersOne to Alberico, one to Brandin, and one to the Governor of Senzio
"Ah," said Rinaldo again"The Governor of Senzio He said it softly, but could not quite disguise the excitement in his voiceHe took a step forward into the room"I never dreamt I would

She withdrew her hand a moment later"What's wrong?"
She shrugged"I'd as soon it wasn't proclaimed throughout the Sandreni Palace and beyond," she murmured, looking straight ahead
Devin lifted his eyebrows"What would you rather they thought about us being upstairs? I just gave them the obvious, boring explanationThey won't even bother to talk about itThis sort of thing happens all the time
"Not to me," said Catriana quietly
"I didn't mean it that way!" Devin protested, taken abackBut unfortunately they were going down the stairs by then, and so it was with a quite unexpected sense of estrangement that he paused to let her re-enter the room before him
More than a little confused, he took his place behind Menico as they prepared to go back out into the courtyard
He had only a minor supporting role in the first two hymns and so he found his thoughts wandering back over the scene just played out upstairsBack, and then back again, with the memory that seemed to be his birthright focusing like a beam of sunlight upon one detail then another, illuminating and revealing what he had missed the first time around
And so it was that by the time it was his own turn to step forward to end and crown the mourning rites, seeing the three clergy leaning forward expectantly, noting how Tomasso struck a pose of rapt

There will be turmoil in the west, disruption, Ygrathens sailing homeShall I tell you what I think?" His pale skin was flushed with a growing excitementAlberico understood that: the man saw chances of his own, land and wealth for himself
It would be a mistake to let Karalius unfold too muchHe would end up thinking the planning was hisAlberico said, "I know exactly what you think, to the very words you would speakI know everything that will be happening in the west except one thing: we don't yet know how many of the Ygrathen army will stayMy guess is that most will leave, rather than be lowered to the level of people they have had mastery over all these yearsThey did not come here to become inconsequential figures in the Palm

Turtle Garden [Feb. 5th, 2010|10:40 am]
"If you are visiting southern China's bustling Xiamen city and want to refresh your brain with a sprinkling of history and some sea air, you can do far worse than head towards The Turtle Garden at the southeast tip of Jimei, northwest of the Xunjiang River.

No, this is not a garden full of turtles. Rather, it is a memorial site built to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs that laid down their lives to liberate Jimei. The garden covers an area of 9,000 square metres and consists of a large concrete area overlooking the sea, an impressively tall monument tower, and the mausoleum of Mr Tan Kah Kee (also known as Chen Jiageng), the respected overseas Chinese businessman that initiated the project in 1951.

The name of the garden comes from the fact that the islet the site is built on is said to look like a turtle. Seen from above, the planned layout also resembles a Chinese character Tu, which means picture or plan.

The site is not only worth going to for its location, which is within earshot of breaking waves, and beautifully proportioned design but its walls are peppered with historical records, moralizing advice and encyclopedic knowledge. The long roofed corridor, which forms the main entrance displays dozens of important scenes from Chinese history. This walkway opens out to the main paved area which is surrounded by low walls all covered in fascinating information such as definitions and pictures of various fruits and vegetables and depictions of historic events. Beside the monument is a wall that is covered in relief carvings of practical education for children, such as the importance of washing oneself, how to clean a room properly, and even not to spit on the floor.

The Turtle Garden is both amusing and educational - which was exactly the concept Tan Kah Kee had in mind all those years ago when he came up with the idea of building the site.
